Hey everyone! I’ve recently been diving into using drones for cultural documentation, particularly in capturing aerial footage of remote archaeological sites. The detail and perspectives are phenomenal, but I’m curious about the tools you’re all using. Any recommendations on best practices or specific gear for this?

Totally agree, the potential drones bring to cultural documentation is massive! I’ve been using the DJI Phantom 4 Pro – it offers excellent stability and camera quality. Also, the software integration with apps like DroneDeploy for mapping and 3D modeling has been a game-changer for my projects.

I’ve been experimenting with integrating LiDAR sensors on drones to create highly detailed topographic maps of historical landscapes. The combination of aerial photography and LiDAR data can offer a rich, multi-layered understanding of a site. Anyone else using similar tech?

This is so inspiring! As a digital artist, I’ve used drones to capture footage that tells narrative stories through landscapes. I haven’t tried LiDAR yet, but it sounds intriguing. What challenges have you faced with it, @tech_historian?

Good question! The main challenge is the complexity and expense of LiDAR-equipped drones. Plus, processing the data requires substantial computing power. But the results are worth it, especially for creating detailed site models.

I love how drones are democratizing access to cultural heritage sites. I’ve been using Parrot Anafi, which is smaller and more portable. Great for travel on rugged terrains and still gives good video quality. Anyone else gone lightweight for similar reasons?
